Die Mission – Warum dieser Nairobi-Blog?

Blogs, die von einem Lebensabschnitt, einer langen Reise oder einem Aufbruch erzählen, möchten natürlich vor allem eins: Die Menschen, die das interessiert, mitnehmen. Das ist natürlich auch mein erstes Ziel. Viele von euch kennen meine Reiseberichte und folgen mir schon lange.

Der Nairobi-Blog hat aber auch noch ein anderes Ziel: Er soll Nairobi in all seinen Facetten, die uns begegnen werden, zeigen. Denn ich glaube, dass Nairobi, Kenia, Afrika in unseren Breitengraden in nur sehr wenigen Facetten wahrgenommen wird. Diese sind: Armut, Safari, Korruption, Krieg und seit einigen Jahren: Katastrophen aufgrund der Klimakrise. Kein Wunder, dass uns so oft ungläubige Blicke begegnet sind, wenn wir erzählten, wieder einmal auf eine Reise ins südliche Afrika aufzubrechen – vor allem mit kleinen Kids.

Bei der Suche nach Fotos für diesen Blog wird mir diese Wahrnehmung bestätigt. Ein Schnelldurchlauf in beliebten Fotodatenbanken fördert zum Suchbegriff „Nairobi“ zutage: ein paar Bilder der Skyline, die alle von denselben Fotografen zu stammen scheinen, dann Giraffen, Elefanten und Zebras – Nairobi National Park lässt grüßen.

Gibt es denn keine anderen Bilder von der Stadt? Von den Events, den Märkten, den Menschen dort, die ein ganz normales Leben führen?

Da ist eine Mission drin

Ihr sehr schon, da steckt eine Mission drin. Es kann natürlich sein, dass der Mangel an Bildern daran liegt, dass es nicht so viele Leute gibt, die mit gezückter Kamera durch die Stadt laufen und alles fotografieren, was ihnen spannend vorkommt. Das ist man in Berlin, London und Paris natürlich gewohnt. Der Tourismus ist in Nairobi zwar auch angekommen, aber noch nicht so multipräsent wie in anderen Städten. Das könnte natürlich auch zur Folge haben, dass sich viele Touristen einfach nicht so recht trauen, die Handykamera auf alles draufzuhalten.

Nun ja, ich werde es sehen. Aber meine Mission steht: Ich möchte euch mein Nairobi zeigen. Und damit hoffentlich auch das von vielen anderen Menschen dort. Ein Nairobi, das Normalität ausstrahlt. In dem man lebt und liebt, arbeitet und feiert, weint und lacht. Und in dem die Geschäftigkeit und der Aufbruch sichtbar wird, den ich dort wahrnehme. Ich bin sehr gespannt, ob es mir gelingen wird, euch das in meinem Nairobi-Blog zu zeigen.

Why this Nairobi blog?

Blogs that tell the story of a stage in life, a long journey or a new departure naturally want one thing above all: to take people who are interested with them. That is, of course, my first goal. Many of you know my travelogues and have been following me for a long time.

But the Nairobi blog also has another goal: to show Nairobi in all its facets that we will encounter. Because I believe that Nairobi, Kenya, Africa is only perceived in very few facets in our latitudes. These are: Poverty, safari, corruption, war and, for some years now: Disasters due to the climate crisis. No wonder we have so often been met with incredulous looks when we tell people that we are travelling to southern Africa again – especially with small children.

When looking for photos for this blog, this perception is confirmed. A quick run through popular photo databases brings up the search term ‘Nairobi’: A few pictures each of the skyline, all taken by the same photographers, then giraffes, elephants and zebras – Nairobi National Park sends its regards.
Are there no other pictures of the city? Of the events, the markets, the people there who lead a completely normal life?

You do, there’s a mission behind it. Of course, it could be that the lack of pictures is due to the fact that there aren’t so many people walking around the city with their cameras out and taking pictures of everything they find exciting. Of course, people in Berlin, London and Paris are used to that. Tourism has also arrived in Nairobi, but it is not yet as widespread as in other cities.

Well, I’ll see. But my mission is clear: I want to show you my Nairobi. And hopefully also that of many other people there. A Nairobi that radiates normality. But one that shows the hustle and bustle and the new beginnings that I perceive there. I am very curious to see if I will succeed.
